PhaseFrame is about thriving as a man. One of the best ways to thrive as a man is to develop skill and take on challenges. Here are 10 hobbies (beyond fantasy football and video games) that any man can take up, master and benefit from, so long as you stick with it.

1. Martial Arts
The biggest bang for your buck is going to come from martial arts. You’ll gain confidence. You’ll gain strength. You’ll gain discipline. You’ll learn mastery over your body. All indisposable.

2. Program Software
Information processing is here to stay. And the guys who do it best control the world. Understanding the logic and process behind building software can go a long way in differentiating yourself in the job market or starting your own business. Start learning now.

3. Strengthen Your Body
I’m a big advocate of thinking about your health as a hobby. learn the skill of treating your body well. Think of it as a process that you can continually get better at throughout your life. Just start now.

4. Learn How To Harvest An Animal
Going from live animal to dinner is a worthwhile skill that fewer and fewer people are capable of doing. While it is not a pretty process, there is huge satisfaction in eating food that you prepared every step of the way.

5. Build Physical Stuff
Building stuff is not rocket science. It may seem daunting, but with the Internet at your finger tips, you can find plans for building just about anything. Just take it one step at a time, and don’t be afraid to mess up. The more you build, the more it makes sense. The more you understand, the less you need plans. The less you need plans, the more creative you can be.

6. Shape Some Land
If you’re lucky enough to own some land, start playing. Build a pond. Grow a garden. Cut out a field for deer to graze. Build an obstacle course. The possibilities are endless.

7. Run An Online Business
I have personally become a multi-millionaire by starting a business as a hobby on the side while working a full time job. The Internet gives you an unprecedented global marketplace. It is also a relatively safe place to play around with entrepreneurship without lots of startup capital. The creative and strategic aspect of running your own business is priceless.

8. Learn an Instrument
I have an old professor friend who plays the Ocarina. Not the most manly of instruments. But it brings him immense joy, and he carries it wherever he goes. Personally, I’ve always wanted to learn bass and drums (rhythm instruments) and that’s the journey I’m currently on. If you’re good, the best chick magnet by far is the guitar. But all musicians get the attention of women, for good reason. It’s a display of confidence and skill. Whatever you choose, do your homework and find good introductory instruction that makes learning fun.

9. Cook Food
If you put enough effort into this hobby, every meal can be like going out to a fancy restaurant. Love it like an art. You’d be surprised at how quickly you are creating gourmet meals in less than an hour. Again, the Internet totally enables you here. Just find the right source and you’re golden.

10. Spin Some Clay
This is my wildcard. I’ve personally started making things out of clay on a spinning wheel. Women love it. And nothing is better than the feel of shaping something with your hands. It’s not all that much different than building things with wood… but it’s far more sensual. Imagine being able to show your new girlfriend a few tricks on the spinning wheel. Lean over her, move her hands as she touches the soft, wet clay. At that point, she’s clay in your hands. You want a hobby that leads to easy sex? This is it.
